Having grown up in the industry, mentored by his father Les Usherwood, a world renowned type and graphic designer, one could say that communications and design is in Brad’s blood. His early career was spent in the family’s design and typography business before leaving to gain broader experience and later found Yield more than 30 years ago.
In 1996, he saw the future in digital and founded Tarantula Interactive with two other partners which ran alongside Yield. After successfully growing the firm and launching a number of important online brands like BMO.com, he sold it to focus more on brand strategy and branding organizations across other touchpoints.
Today, Brad still leads strategy and creative as he still loves the work and working with the clients, even after 30 plus years.
Over Yield’s 30 years, Brad has amassed an enormous breadth of experience that covers more than 20 industry sectors and 170 clients. He has worked on all 5 of the big 5 banks, prestigious automotive brands like Porsche, Canada’s best known insurance companies, CPG and beverage alcohol, along with some of the largest not-for-profits like World Vision and the Heart & Stroke Foundation. He is particularly skilled at complicated multi-facet organizations that need to sort out and simplify their brands.
Brad is a rare individual who began his career as a Graphic designer, before growing into Yield’s first creative director. As the firm matured, Brad spent more and more time with clients advising them on their brands so his role naturally evolved to include strategy. Brad is gifted with a highly spacial mind that allows him to see brands across their many dimensions, then work with creative teams to ensure the creative ideas connect back to that strategy. This has been critical to the success of our clients business after we establish a new brand.
Brad has led some of the firm’s most significant multi-year engagements. When Scotiabank International was losing share with the youth market in the Caribbean, Brad led the development of a new youth brand that rolled out across 26 countries. When the massive insurance company Foresters decided to rebrand, Brad guided the implementation of the new brand globally across hundreds of brand assets while helping the organization develop the internal creative capabilities to support the roll-out. Our most famous client/brand to date has been Porsche where Brad led the account, strategically & creatively for more than 6 years helping them grow over 300% in unit sales. When a new President for Canada joined Equifax, her first mandate was to turn the organization back to growth which began with rearticulating the brand’s value in Canada. Brad led the initiative which turned into a 4 year overhaul of all aspects of their marketing. His strategic and creative direction of Deloitte‘s famous “green dot” campaign moved the brand from 4th to 1st place in awareness, familiarity and favourability among the big four consulting firms. Most recently Brad was tasked with branding Ontario’s 40,000 plus doctors where he developed a long-term masterbrand strategy and creative campaign that changed the way the public thought about their doctor for the Ontario Medical Association.
Brad a big believer in supporting his local community, Georgetown as an active board member of Ontario’s only not-for-profit Craft Beer Festival. He leads the strategic and creative planning around the brand helping it grow to become the #1 festival in the GTA. Yield provides pro-bono creatives service to support the promotion & marketing of the event. And yes he likes craft beer!
When it comes to our craft, Brad cares deeply about the talent in our industry and gives his time as the Bachelor of Design Program Advisory Chair at Conestoga College to help ensure the skill our young creatives are learning are what the industry needs as it evolves.
Brad is also a very active individual as a cyclist and downhill skier. He also loves cars and used to be an instructor for the Porsche club. He can regularly be found driving his 911 at the race track at speed.

John Penner
IT Manager
Responsibilities
Administration of Network and Services
End-user support
John has a background in technical support and over a decade of experience as a technical writer in 3D computer animation. He has worked both the back end setting up networks and servers, and is also a programmer releasing apps for iOS.
Over two decades, John has worked with networks starting by running his own BBS with a dialup modem. He did phone tech support for ArchiCAD and wrote a book on GDL (Geometric Description Language) programming. This lead to almost a decade of writing technical documentation for the Houdini 3D animation system. He spent another ten years doing backend server and end-user support, and stayed abreast of the development of the Internet, managing Web Servers and Virtual Machines on Linux, macOS, and Windows platforms.
John’s focus is maintaining client uptime so that they have no impediments to business functioning. There is a technical solution that must be understood in the context of the client’s need — how to make technology work for them when taking for granted the technical ability and sophistication to deal with the problem at hand and to plan ahead so that problems do not arise.
John has worked on a number of vertically technical projects which require cross-discipline integrations of hardware, software, and networking. Operating the Big Freeze bullet-time capture rig for Xerox 360° (2013), a Toyota commercial, (2013), and a Tampa Bay Lightning commercial with Steven Stamkos (2014). He has also managed the more mundane service of hosting virtual machines at The Wire in Toronto.

In his work with Yield, Richard has been at the center of some of our most successful website implementations including:
- Arrow Capital: Richard led the development of this complex web project that required challenging integrations with various capital market data feeds so that the client’s product portfolios would dynamically update daily given their investors visit the website regularly. Additionally, the site was integrated with their CRM system to support new client acquisition. https://arrow-capital.com

Joel D'Alimonte
Cinematographer / Content Creator
Responsibilities
Director
Videographer
Camera operator
Joel is a highly experienced cinematographer who has worked in the film, video, and television industry for over 15 years. With a background in marketing and business, Joel takes a uniquely analytical and technical approach to content creation, asking questions first to fully understand the problem before he offers up solutions.
With Yield, Joel has been our cinematographer on multiple award-winning videos shot all across North America. He is also a talented editor and visual effects specialist which means he understands how every shot needs to fit together to tell the story and accommodate post-production effects. Over the past three years Joel has become Yield’s indispensable video partner and at the center of some of our most successful video productions including:
- Ontario Medical Association: In 2020, the pandemic was in full force and doctors were working incredible hours, putting themselves at risk, and suffering deep emotional stress. Yield recommended celebrating Doctors’ Day by asking the public to ‘shine a light for doctors’ with their smartphone on May 1. Joel helped film dozens of ‘shine a light’ scenarios from tall apartment buildings requiring drone shots to street celebrations filmed from moving vehicles before and on Doctors’ Day that showed hundreds of people recognizing doctors with their smart phones. The campaign was so successful it broke every OMA engagement record and won a Gold Summit Award.
- IPEX: For Canada’s leading manufacturer of industrial PVC pipe, Yield wanted to bring their story to life using the pipe as a metaphor for connections. Joel was able to film complicated table-top set-ups of pipe and fittings that were later manipulated in post-production to link scenes together. Then, he worked with the Yield team in North Carolina and Texas, filming a new IPEX manufacturing facility that required overhead drone shots, in-person interviews with engineers and carefully lit production shots inside existing manufacturing facilities. The finished product was also recognized with Gold at the Summit Awards.
Joel is a hard worker but on his rare off days you’ll see him remaining active outside playing basketball, snowboarding or going for runs. He is also an avid scuba diver discovering fish and coral in Mexico, Jamaica and Dominican Republic.
