Chris Torbay

Chris Torbay is Super Ad Critic for CBC

Every year Super Bowl advertising is highly anticipated and draws the top ad rates on both sides of the border – a 30 second spot goes for about $4,000,000 in the US, $300,000 in Canada. It has also become a cultural phenomenon where audiences eagerly await the newest ads from celebrated advertisers like Pepsi, Budweiser, e-Trade and Go Daddy. Torbay commented on ads seen in the US and in Canada in a lively debate with co-host, Kevin O’Leary and Dianne Buckner.

“Primetime TV is still an incredibly effective way to get your message out to a broad audience,” says Torbay, “and no audience is as broad as the Super Bowl. Even in Canada it draws 7.5 million viewers, topped only by a Stanley Cup Game 7 or an Olympic Hockey gold medal match. And Canadians may complain about not seeing all the American ads but they make up for it and lead the world in online Super Bowl ad searches on sites like YouTube’s Adblitz.”
